Things to do in Celje

We invite all course participants and their attendants to take time during their stay in Slovenia and see the many natural and cultural sights that Celje with its surroundings offers.

A quaint central European town that proudly celebrates its long turbulent history and rich cultural heritage, with some 50,000 inhabitants Celje is the third largest city in Slovenia and an increasingly popular destination for both domestic and international tourists.

CELEIA – A TOWN BENEATH TODAYS TOWN

The basement of the Princely Palace – beneath the palace’s courtyard – houses the largest exhibition with in-situ preserved remains of ancient Celeia. The astonishing monuments from almost 2000 years ago are supplemented with textual and pictorial explanations.

THE COUNTS OF CELJE

The Counts of Celje permanent exhibition shows the rise and fall of the most important noble lineage in the Late Middle Ages within contemporary Slovenian territory.

THE CELJE HUT

Celjska koča (the Celje hut) with its hinterland is a part of a country side on the southern part of the Celje valley, for which the main characteristics is a hilly landscape, typical of this area is also the preserved natural habitat and small density of population. It is relatively close to the city Celje (8,5 km from Pečovnik and 12 km from Štore) and is connected to the valley with roads and hiking paths.

THE LAKE ŠMARTINSKO JEZERO

The lake Šmartinsko jezero was created in 1970. It is the current record holder for the biggest (heaviest) carp ever caught in Slovenia which weighs 34,60kg. It can be reached from various directions and spreads on 113 ha of water surfaces – that makes it one of the largest artificial lakes in Slovenia.

BEER FOUNTAIN ŽALEC

Fountain of the Green Gold represents a tribute to the hop heritage of Žalec and Lower Savinja Valley, which embodies the centre of hop growing industry in Slovenia.

LOGARSKA VALLEY

The Logar Valley is one of the most beautiful Alpine glacial valleys in Europe. It extends into the Kamnik-Savinja Alps from the north. A part of the Solčavsko region, tradition and nature have found harmony here, serving as a good example of sustainable development. As an added value to agriculture and forestry, tourism offers an opportunity for relaxation in the peaceful ambience of the landscape park as well as hiking, cycling, horseback riding, photo hunting, etc.
